As soon as I realized that we needed to choose an inspiration piece for this week’s Project Accessory craft-along, I knew that I wanted to use this Lia Sophia necklace.  It’s one of their limited edition Kiam Faily Signature Collection pieces from about 7 years ago.  It was outside of my budget, so I hosted a jewelry party specifically so I could order it for $15.  (I think it was about $95 at regular price – ouch!)  It’s been my very favorite piece of jewelry ever since!

Looking at the necklace, I immediately thought of two things I already had on hand:  ball chains and rhinestones.  Perfect.

First I made a wrap bracelet.  I cut a long strip of suede that was left over from last week’s challenge and spray painted it in with a textured dark silver color.  Then I attached a ball  chain by sewing a stitch in the space between two balls every couple of inches, giving it a draping that echoes the necklace.  Then I glued on some rhinestones.  It closes with peel-and-stick velcro,  mostly because I wasn’t in the mood to add any kind of closure that involved sewing.

Then I had to decorate up a pair of shoes!  I chose a pair of ballet flats that I bought on clearance at K-Mart a few years  ago for $2.  They originally had little bows  on the toes, but parts of the ends of the bows came unglued and they looked terrible.  I ripped off the bows and replaced them with some black rhinestone flowers from my junk jewelry collection, then draped them all the way around with the same beading technique.  Of course, I also had to add a few more rhinestones to each shoe for good measure.

I love  my  new matching accessories!  Do you craft along too?  If you did,  please link up your projects below!   (If you’re late to the party, don’t worry, this linky will stay open!)

Note: Please only link up projects that are directly related to this challenge! Submissions should fit the criteria of our challenge.

It’s time to bust that stash!  You have massive piles to use up but no idea where to begin or what to make.  Crafter’s block is frustrating, though overcoming it may not be as difficult as you think.  If you’re feeling stuck in a creative rut the best way out is to try something different.  When you’re feeling less-than-inspired, here are a few exercises to help get your crafty neurons firing again.

1.  Touch Your Supplies

It may sound silly, but handling your stash is a great way to jump-start your creative side.  Close your eyes and feel the weave of your fabrics, the softness of your yarns, or the texture and weight of your papers.  What do these sensations make you think of?  I find that often, the tactile experience gets my brain moving in directions it may not have otherwise gone.

2.   Sort Your Supplies

There are a couple of ways that sorting your supplies can help to give you new ideas.  First, doing a general sort of your  stash will make exactly what you have on hand fresh in your mind.  You might come across a gorgeous sheet of stickers or a funky remnant of fabric you’d forgotten you had.  When you originally bought all of these things, something inside you saw a glimmer of inspiration.  Seeing your collection through fresh eyes can take you back to that moment in time and remind you of what you saw in each item.

If you have specific project needs, such as a piece for your mantel or a gift for a baby shower, try sorting your supplies by colors.  If you want to do an Easter project, for instance, go through everything you own and pull out anything that is in pastel colors.  Don’t discriminate based on the type of materials in your stash; include everything you can find that’s in the right colors.  For example, even if you’re making a greeting card, don’t hesitate to include materials that weren’t intended for paper crafting.  Seeing these supplies in a new context can lead to surprising and ingenious results.

3.  Randomize Your Supplies

Still stumped?  Then how about playing a fun game?  Try getting crafty MacGuyver style!

Start by writing down a list of your supplies and cutting the list out into slips of paper.   Be specific; say “pink and white gingham” or “blue grosgrain” rather than writing “fabric” or “ribbon.”  Fold up your slips of paper and put them in a hat, then draw three random items.  Challenge yourself to make something that incorporates all three of  these items somehow.

To avoid further frustration when you pick a seemingly impossible combination, give yourself a time limit.  If you haven’t come up with any ideas after 15 minutes of brainstorming, put the slips back in the hat and draw again.

Well, what are you waiting for?  Go play with your stash; it’s not going to bust itself!

65 blogs we love

It’s April, which means it’s officially stashbusting month!  It’s time to dust off all of the supplies hiding at the back of your closets and create using what you already have on hand.  Think of it like spring cleaning, only much more fun!  If you’re planning to plow through your excess stash this month, you’ll be needing plenty of ideas and inspiration.  Heather and Rhonda put their heads together and came up with this list of must-visit blogs to help steer your way through your stashbusting odyssey.  Give your bookmarking finger a few good stretches, then read on.

Every Post is Amazing

One of the things we value most highly is innovation (coming up with new ideas). These blogs do it time and time again:

[Recycled Keyboard Letter Necklaces by Mich L in L.A.]

1. Mich L in L.A. – Every post is more amazing and delightful than the last. Michelle is a genius repurposer, and one of the most innovative creators we’ve ever seen. [Mini Crepe Paper Roses by Filth Wizardry]

2. Filth Wizardry – This is another blog that continually delights us, post after post. Almost all the projects are amazing innovative, cheap projects you can do with your kids (or your kids can do by themselves).

[Wine Cork Ink Pens by Paper, Plate, and Plane]

6.  Paper, Plate, and Plane – We have two standard reactions each time we pull up a new post on Jeromina’s blog.   1.  Gasp! and 2.  “I would never have thought to use _____ to make ______!” She has an amazing talent for turning everyday objects into incredible creations.

Hi! It’s Amy from Mod Podge Rocks – decoupage-R and Halloween crafter extraordinaire.  Not only do I write for MPR but I write for Paint Me Plaid, a blog all about using acrylic paint.  One of my favorite days of the week on PMP is Tuesday because it’s Tuesday Huesday.  That is the day I present a color palette to my readers inspired by various trends.

I’m so happy to present a Tuesday Huesday-type post for Dollar Store Craft readers.  Since Halloween is my very favorite holiday in the whole world, I knew I had to do some Halloween colors palettes. Just for fun, I’m also giving away a special prize! Check the bottom of this post for details about the contest. <– contest is now closed, but you can still read about it. :)

I also wanted to share with you my inspiration, which comes from my “inspiration book.”  If you don’t have one, start one TODAY.  It can just be a small notebook that you use to capture sketches, magazine tears, paint chips – whatever inspires you and will help you with your next craft idea.  Let’s just dive right in with some scans from my inspiration book.

Gourds are your little forest friends with happy faces – and did you ever notice the vibrant and varying colors of them?  From bright orange to yellow green, gourds can be beautiful and so pleasing to the eye.  I also love the dead log they are sitting on.  So gray that it’s nearly purple.  Amazing what nature comes up with.

What would a Halloween party be without purple?  This is from Martha Stewart (of course), and I can’t help but love the peridot and gold mixed in on that tabletop.  Very elegant.  How did Martha get purple dry ice?  I know.  Because Martha can get anything she wants.

Here are a few pictures on one page with traditional Halloween black and orange.  Of note: the bag tree with the varying shades of orange, the brightness of the countdown calendar and the white bats on black candles.  The latter is a great technique for Halloween painting, by the way.  Who would expect to see black pumpkins on orange?  Or purple bats on green?  Think about mixing it up.

Speaking of mixing it up, this image (also from Martha Stewart) reminds me that nearly any critter can become “Halloween-y” when done in the right color palette.  What punches and shapes do you own?  Can you make buttons in orange and purple work on your project?  Take everyday items in Halloween shades and try to incorporate them into a project.  You’ll be surprised.

This is one of my favorite scans from my inspiration book – notice the pretty painted pumpkins and that GORGEOUS Halloween dress – but also notice how well blue works with orange!  Contrasting colors, yes, we all know that . . . but perhaps a few of your Halloween pumpkins deserve some blue highlights here and there?  Just a thought.

Here’s one final image – a simple white cake, but how eye-catching.  Also from Martha.  Don’t be afraid to use copious amounts of white this holiday season.  Bright is nice, but it doesn’t have to be to catch attention.

And without further adieu, here are your Halloween palettes.  One is bright and one is muted.  Don’t be afraid to jump into color this holiday season (and don’t forget to add black and white).  The water is fine!  Come join me at Mod Podge Rocks or Paint Me Plaid for more Halloween projects and color play .  Happy crafting and happy holidays.

Halloween Bright Palette created using FolkArt Acrylic Colors (from left to right): Medium Gray, Perfect Purple, Light Lavender, School Bus Yellow, Yellow Citron and Pure Orange

Halloween Muted Palette created using FolkArt Acrylic Colors (from left to right): Cast Shadow, Lilac Love, Purple Lilac, Sunny Yellow, Hauser Green Light, Pumpkin

Mich L. in LA came up with yet another great idea from her Super Secret Stash stuff! She took the item in the stash that least inspired her and challenged herself to make something from it. Instead of using the actual item, she decided to take the words from the item and use them to make a reversible pendant. You really have to see her post to get this project, but I’ll just tell you that it has an optimistic and a pessimistic side to it, and also that I love the concept of this flippable pendant! [click here to see what I’m talking about!]

I really like the idea of making a pendant that can be worn one way one day, and then flipped if you are in a different mood another day. Kind of like an updated take on a mood ring! Be inspired by this concept to make the back of your items just as pretty as the front (but different), and your creations will become twice as interesting!

Project Estimate:

  • A quote you like, on hand
  • An item with two sides, on hand
  • Mod Podge, paper, fabric, whatever you need to make your pendant
  • Jewelry findings, on hand or $1 and up

Total: Free and up

p.s. Sorry about the weird price estimate – there’s no real way to recreate this exactly!

This is one of the coolest projects I have come across! If you only click on one link today, click on this one to Living Locurto’s reverse sign painting tutorial! Not only is the idea wonderful, but the tutorial is informative, makes the project look easily doable, and has extra tips to help you do a great job. [via Best of DIY] [project by Cathe Holden]

A reverse painted sign would be the perfect gift for many people, especially if it was customized for the recipient. Depending on the font and layout you use, these signs can look antique, retro, or modern. You are really only limited by your imagination. You can easily reverse paint an old fashioned sign from stuff you find at the dollar store. Look for frames with glass (there should be a decent selection) or framed art. The thrift store, dump, or reclaimed building supply store will also yield great materials.

This is also a fabulous idea for making signs for your business. You can use this technique on your store windows (if you have a store!) or make a small framed sign for craft fairs, like this one from the tutorial:

Project Estimate:

  • Frame with glass, $1
  • Acrylic craft paint, $.50 each
  • Photo/layout program, on hand (if you don’t have one, visit Sumo Paint to do your layout online)
  • Paint brushes, on hand

Total cost: $1.50 and up

Guess what, Valentine’s Day is coming up soon, and it’s time to think
about decorating for it! I personally loved the cheeriness brought to
my little house by handmade Christmas decorations, so as I am putting
them away (yes, I’m still putting them away), I really want to replace
them with some heart-shaped cheer.

I just discovered the Joys of Home blog, a home decor blog with particular love for the dollar store. A blog after my own heart!

Joy wrote a post with some inspiration for Valentine’s Day decorating, so go check it out!

A couple years ago, Craftster.org (probably the biggest, best crafty website in the world) had a dollar store crafting challenge.

Participants had to make their creation spending $5 or less at the Dollar Store. There were some clever and cute housewares that Craftster members made, all for the same price as a Venti Frappuccino!

Two of my favorite entries just happened to be by the same creator, Eleanor from Vendibles.

I love this fruity shower curtain she made with a shower curtain and some plastic fruit placemats!

And here are the supplies she used to make this adorable lantern! Color me inspired!

Craftster member LiquidScissors made this clever message board for $4 using a checker set, a corkboard, thumb tacks, and one of those static cling doodlepads that when you pull up the film it erases. She glued checker board to the corkboard, glued the message pad on and glued the checkers to the thumb tacks.

The winner of the challenge was swalsh’s ingenious bedside stand made from photo frames and a package of plastic army men. Amazing!

I hope you’re inspired! I am!
