Make a DIY washi tape organizer from a cupcake carrier and free coin rolls from the bank.

I’m always looking for ways to keep my craft supplies organized.  The less time I have to spend looking for things, the more time I get to spend crafting!  I was thrilled to find these cupcake carriers at Dollar Tree, and immediately knew what I would use them for:  washi tape storage!

Since I’m trying to craft with what I already have, I paired them with paper coin rolls to make this project.  You can use what you have on hand (corks, dowel rods, clothespins, etc.) to make your own washi tape holder quickly and inexpensively.

Project Estimate:

  • Cupcake Carrier – $1
  • Coin rolls – $1
  • Glue gun – on hand
Total:  $2Make a DIY washi tape organizer from a cupcake carrier and free coin rolls from the bank.
Step one:  Double up the paper coin holders.  The nickel rolls were too long to fit my carrier, so check before you move to step two.

Step two:  Use a hot glue gun to glue the coin rolls in place.

Step three:  Slide your washi tape rolls over the paper rolls, and snap the lid in place.

Since the lid is clear, you can see at a glance what is in the case.  The handle makes it a breeze to take your tape with you, which is perfect for scrap nights or crafting with friends. My daughter loves washi tape even more than I do, so with this carrier she can just borrow my tape without rummaging through my things.  For just $2 and a few minutes time I was able to get my craft stash a bit more organized!

Do you have an excess of ribbon that you need to tame?  See how I used materials that I had laying around to create super easy, really quick racks to contain my collection!

Ribbon, ribbon and more ribbon!  I have so many spools that they were starting to take over my craft studio. It’s much more organized now, with everything in plain view on my shelves so I can always see exactly what I have on hand.

Watch the video below to see how I made it, or keep scrolling for written directions!

Project estimate:

  • Scrap board, on hand
  • Drill, on hand
  • Hot glue, on hand
  • Pencils, on hand or $1
  • Ribbon, on hand

Total:  Free and up!

ribbonrack1

Drill holes in a board where you would like each stack of ribbon spools to go.  A 5/16 inch drill bit will make a hole that is just the right size!

ribbonrack2

Squirt a little hot glue into the holes, the firmly press a pencil into each hole.

I added some ribbon to trim the edges of mine to make it a wee bit prettier.  This is an optional step, but since you’ve got all that ribbon on hand anyway, why not?

Slide your spools of ribbon onto the pencils, then sit back and enjoy your handiwork!

Make a Magnetic Pin Dish

Have you ever lost a pin, and then later found it…  with your foot?  I had that happen once, and I am pretty sure everyone in the neighborhood heard my scream of agony.  Avoid that terrible situation with this clever idea from Maggie at Smashed Peas and Carrots!  She found some adorable little owl dishes that she turned into magnetic pin holders.  Aren’t they just too sweet?  You can do this project with just about any pretty little dish you happen to come across.  (It’s a great reason to buy some of those cute odds and ends on the housewares rack at the thrift shop!)  [how to make a magnetic pin dish]

Project estimate:

  • Small dish, on hand or $1 and up
  • Magnets, $1 and up
  • Glue, on hand

Total: $1 and up

No matter your craft supply of choice, once you amass a large collection there is always the same question: how in the heck am I going to organize all of this stuff?  If fabric is your supply vice and you are looking for a way not only to store it but to know exactly what you have on hand at a glance, you will adore this idea from Karen at Sew Many Ways.  Her fabric collection now hangs in a file cabinet, tucked neatly away in a so -simple-it’s-brilliant manner.  Used file cabinets re one of those items that you can find in almost any thrift store, which also makes this an insanely cheap storage solution!  [how to organize your fabric in a file cabinet]

Project estimate:

  • File cabinet, on hand or about $5
  • File folders, on hand or $1 and up
  • Fabric, on hand

Total:  Free and up
