Did you know that studies have shown that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2011\/11\/22\/science\/a-serving-of-gratitude-brings-healthy-dividends.html\" target=\"_blank\">keeping track of your gratitude<\/a> can positively affect your health and quality of life? Here&#8217;s a pretty way to remind yourself of all the things you have to be grateful for: a Thankful Centerpiece with a rustic yet glam theme.\u00a0 Read on for the tutorial!<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Project Materials:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Metal pail, $1<\/li>\n<li>Floral foam, $1<\/li>\n<li>2 Packages of felt flower coasters, $2<\/li>\n<li>Bamboo skewers, $1<\/li>\n<li>Burlap, on hand or $1 worth<\/li>\n<li>Hot glue and glue gun, on hand<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Total cost: $5<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m participating in the <a href=\"http:\/\/dollarstorecrafts.com\/tag\/martha-stewart\/\" target=\"_blank\">12 Months of Martha<\/a> project, sponsored by Martha Stewart, so I wanted to add a Martha twist to my dollar store centerpiece. The burlap and natural skewers bring a rustic charm, while the Martha Stewart products add a touch of gold glam! If you want to bring the cost of this project way down, just skip the gold leafing step.<\/p>\n<p>1. Gather your gold leafing supplies. You need a couple things: masking tape, gold leaf sizing (or spray adhesive), gold leaf sheets, a large soft paintbrush, and clear sealant.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-30179\" alt=\"Masking off container to apply gold leaf\" src=\"http:\/\/dollarstorecrafts.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/thankful-centerpiece-05-580x435.jpg\" width=\"580\" height=\"435\" srcset=\"https:\/\/dollarstorecrafts.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/thankful-centerpiece-05-580x435.jpg 580w, https:\/\/dollarstorecrafts.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/thankful-centerpiece-05-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/dollarstorecrafts.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/thankful-centerpiece-05.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 580px) 100vw, 580px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>2. Mask off the desired design with masking tape. I did a single peak chevron design.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-30178\" alt=\"Spray glue for gold leafing\" src=\"http:\/\/dollarstorecrafts.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/thankful-centerpiece-04-580x435.jpg\" width=\"580\" height=\"435\" srcset=\"https:\/\/dollarstorecrafts.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/thankful-centerpiece-04-580x435.jpg 580w, https:\/\/dollarstorecrafts.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/thankful-centerpiece-04-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/dollarstorecrafts.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/thankful-centerpiece-04.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 580px) 100vw, 580px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>3. Apply gold leaf sizing, spray glue, or rubber cement to your container. I didn&#8217;t have gold leaf sizing, so I used spray adhesive. The glue surface should be tacky but not wet when you apply the gold leaf.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-30193\" alt=\"Applying gold leaf\" src=\"http:\/\/dollarstorecrafts.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/thankful-centerpiece-03b.jpg\" width=\"468\" height=\"511\" srcset=\"https:\/\/dollarstorecrafts.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/thankful-centerpiece-03b.jpg 468w, https:\/\/dollarstorecrafts.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/thankful-centerpiece-03b-275x300.jpg 275w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 468px) 100vw, 468px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>4. To apply gold leaf, place the gold leaf sheet on top of the adhesive surface. Gently push leafing down with your hands, covering all of the glue surface. It&#8217;s okay if it&#8217;s bumpy at this point.<\/p>\n<p>I used 2 sheets of gold leaf for this container.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-30192\" alt=\"Burnishing gold leaf\" src=\"http:\/\/dollarstorecrafts.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/thankful-centerpiece-02b.jpg\" width=\"519\" height=\"478\" srcset=\"https:\/\/dollarstorecrafts.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/thankful-centerpiece-02b.jpg 519w, https:\/\/dollarstorecrafts.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/thankful-centerpiece-02b-300x276.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 519px) 100vw, 519px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>5. Next, burnish the gold leaf with a large, soft paintbrush. &#8220;Burnish&#8221; just means rub the gold leaf into the glue until it&#8217;s flat.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-30191\" alt=\"Remove masking tape from gold leafing project\" src=\"http:\/\/dollarstorecrafts.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/thankful-centerpiece-01b.jpg\" width=\"452\" height=\"430\" srcset=\"https:\/\/dollarstorecrafts.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/thankful-centerpiece-01b.jpg 452w, https:\/\/dollarstorecrafts.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/thankful-centerpiece-01b-300x285.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 452px) 100vw, 452px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>6. Remove masking tape from your project. Burnish the remaining gold leaf. Spray with clear acrylic sealer to protect the gold leaf finish.<\/p>\n<p>Note: Gold leaf is not supposed to look perfect, so don&#8217;t worry if there are some pits and distresses to the finish. It&#8217;s part of the charm.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Creating the Floral Arrangement:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-30184\" alt=\"thankful centerpiece by dollar store crafts - rustic meets glam!\" src=\"http:\/\/dollarstorecrafts.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/thankful-centerpiece-dollar-store-crafts.jpg\" width=\"480\" height=\"536\" srcset=\"https:\/\/dollarstorecrafts.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/thankful-centerpiece-dollar-store-crafts.jpg 480w, https:\/\/dollarstorecrafts.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/thankful-centerpiece-dollar-store-crafts-269x300.jpg 269w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 480px) 100vw, 480px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>1. Cover your floral foam with burlap (if necessary, trim floral foam to fit in container before you start). Insert foam into container.<\/p>\n<p>2. Hot glue felt flower coasters to bamboo skewers. Glue gold leaves to skewers.<\/p>\n<p>3. Insert skewers into floral foam to make a floral arrangement. Tip: vary the length of the skewers to add variety and height to the arrangement. You can trim the skewers with scissors.<\/p>\n<p>4. Write what you&#8217;re thankful for onto the labels. (I used Martha Stewart markers). Stick labels onto skewers. Insert into arrangement.<\/p>\n<p>Tip: Allow your family to add to the arrangement by writing down what they are thankful for onto labels!<\/p>\n<p>5. Fill arrangement in with burlap picks. To make, cut burlap squares, then fold square in quarters.
