margin: 0px !important;\" src=\"http:\/\/www.assoc-amazon.com\/e\/ir?t=dolstocra-20&amp;l=as2&amp;o=1&amp;a=B001145BDU\" border=\"0\" alt=\"\" width=\"1\" height=\"1\" \/> (or there are &#8220;no sew&#8221; clothes in one place, so I can pair them up.\u00a0 Be flexible and think a little outside the box about what pieces could go together.\u00a0 For this project, I started with these.\u00a0 Since the shirt is white, they can &#8220;match&#8221; on their own, but Firecracker isn&#8217;t thrilled about the plain white shirt.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/dollarstorecrafts.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/applique2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-5652\" title=\"applique2\" src=\"http:\/\/dollarstorecrafts.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/applique2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"240\" height=\"320\" srcset=\"https:\/\/dollarstorecrafts.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/applique2.jpg 240w, https:\/\/dollarstorecrafts.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/applique2-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 240px) 100vw, 240px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>2. Choose a motif.\u00a0 If one of your pieces has a pattern, see if there&#8217;s a way to turn that into an applique.\u00a0 In this case, the skirt had a design with layered hearts and flowers.\u00a0 I decided to use the hearts because it was an easy pattern to copy.\u00a0 If there is no obvious motif, then choose one and use a common fabric to applique onto both the shirt and pants\/skirt to bring the outfit together.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/dollarstorecrafts.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/applique3.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-5653\" title=\"applique3\" src=\"http:\/\/dollarstorecrafts.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/applique3.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"228\" height=\"204\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>3.\u00a0 Make (or find) your pattern.\u00a0 I did a quick internet search and came up with a basic layered heart picture.\u00a0 I liked the shape of the heart, but they layers were a little too close together for what I needed, so I tinkered around with the sizes a bit and came up with this pattern.\u00a0 (A printable version of the pattern can be found at the end of this post.)<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/dollarstorecrafts.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/applique4.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-5654\" title=\"applique4\" src=\"http:\/\/dollarstorecrafts.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/applique4.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"320\" height=\"240\" srcset=\"https:\/\/dollarstorecrafts.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/applique4.jpg 320w, https:\/\/dollarstorecrafts.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/applique4-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 320px) 100vw, 320px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>4.\u00a0 Choose your look.\u00a0 There are a lot of ways to applique.\u00a0\u00a0The two main ones I use are satin stitch or a straight stitch.\u00a0 With a straight stitch your edges will fray a little after multiple washings, but is great for knits since they don&#8217;t fray.\u00a0 Satin stitch will seal in your edges, so that most fabrics will not fray at all, but it can be a bit trickier to get the stitching to be even.\u00a0 I used regular straight stitching for this project, but if you want more information and examples of satin stitching, you can see <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/helpinglittlehands.blogspot.com\/2010\/03\/satin-stitched-poodle-shirt-applique.html\">my post here<\/a><\/span><\/span>.\u00a0 If you don&#8217;t like to sew or don&#8217;t have a sewing machine available, you could also sew the edges by hand.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/dollarstorecrafts.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/applique5.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-5655\" title=\"applique5\" src=\"http:\/\/dollarstorecrafts.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/applique5.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/dollarstorecrafts.com\/?p=5649&amp;page=3\">Go to page 3<\/a> for more<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><br applique!\u00a0 Now we&#8217;re to my favorite part.\u00a0 Trace your pattern onto the papery side of some Heat&#8217;n Bond Lite.\u00a0 (There are other products out there that will work for this&#8230;but this the one I&#8217;m most familiar with.)\u00a0 Keep in mind that your design will up reversed (a mirror image of) your original design.\u00a0 For this heart and a lot of other patterns it won&#8217;t matter.\u00a0 It definitely matters if you&#8217;re doing letters though, so be careful.\u00a0 I traced the biggest heart by itself and then traced the three smaller hearts one on top of the other.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/dollarstorecrafts.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/applique6.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-5656\" title=\"applique6\" src=\"http:\/\/dollarstorecrafts.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/applique6.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Carefully cut out the smaller hearts from the insides of the larger.\u00a0 When you&#8217;re done with this step, you should have solid heart shapes for the biggest and smallest hearts and hollow heart shapes for the middle two hearts.\u00a0 Iron your Heat&#8217;n Bond Lite adhesive side down, PAPER SIDE UP onto your fabric.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/dollarstorecrafts.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/applique7.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-5657\" title=\"applique7\" src=\"http:\/\/dollarstorecrafts.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/applique7.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"320\" height=\"240\" srcset=\"https:\/\/dollarstorecrafts.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/applique7.jpg 320w, https:\/\/dollarstorecrafts.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/applique7-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 320px) 100vw, 320px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Peel the paper backing off the three smaller hearts, but DO NOT take the paper backing off the largest heart yet.\u00a0 Arrange the three smaller hearts on top of the biggest one so they&#8217;re evenly spaced.\u00a0 I would probably iron them one at a time, and then add the next layer.\u00a0 Iron well.<\/p>\n<p>Now you&#8217;re ready to stitch.\u00a0 I used matching thread because I had it on hand.\u00a0 I wouldn&#8217;t go out and buy new thread for a project like this.\u00a0 If you don&#8217;t have matching thread, it can be decorative to use a different color.\u00a0 Since all the layers are securely stuck to each other at this point, it doesn&#8217;t matter which layer you stitch first.\u00a0 I think I started with yellow because there was already yellow thread in the matchine.\u00a0 I do as much of the stitching on the applique as I can before putting the applique on the shirt.\u00a0 This way, there are as few threads as possible rubbing the skin through the shirt and less chance of the ends coming undone.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/dollarstorecrafts.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/applique8.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-5658\" title=\"applique8\" src=\"http:\/\/dollarstorecrafts.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/applique8.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"320\" height=\"240\" srcset=\"https:\/\/dollarstorecrafts.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/applique8.jpg 320w, sizes=\"(max-width: 320px) 100vw, 320px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>For each line of stitching, I made sure to leave the ends extra long, so I could pull them through to the back and tie a knot rather than stitching back and forth to secure the ends.\u00a0 This will give your applique a cleaner look.\u00a0 You want to make sure to tie the knot several times on the back though and pull them tight because I have occassionally had one come undone after many washings.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/dollarstorecrafts.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/applique10.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" applique to your shirt.\u00a0 A word of caution&#8230;measure to double check you&#8217;ve got it centered.\u00a0 There&#8217;s nothing worse than examining a finished project and realizing it&#8217;s crooked.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/dollarstorecrafts.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/applique11.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-5661\" sizes=\"(max-width: 320px) 100vw, 320px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Once you&#8217;re sure it&#8217;s placed where you want it, iron it down well.\u00a0 Once you think it&#8217;s stuck down well, iron it some more.\u00a0 Then when you&#8217;re sure it&#8217;s ironed really well, iron it through the inside of the shirt.\u00a0 You&#8217;d be surprised that there are still some places where it&#8217;s not stuck well.\u00a0 (This is also why I always sew the edges instead of using the &#8220;no sew&#8221; stronger adhesives&#8230;I still don&#8217;t trust that they&#8217;re completely stuck on.)\u00a0 Then stitch onto your shirt.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/dollarstorecrafts.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/applique12.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full
